Mizzou MUtants, 5th Place: Ozark Section 2009

The MUtants' weekend started on Saturday morning with the most important game of the day. Beautiful weather for ultimate, a light breeze and sunny skies got everone in the mood to play. Harding Apocalypse came out and battled the MUtants to half 6-5. Mizzou regrouped during the half and came out running a flat-and-under defense running to a quick 13-7 victory. Next up was Ozark Sectionals champion Kansas; Mizzou played well and came up with a 6-13 loss. After what was a 3 hour bye Mizzou played Tulsa rolling to a 13-4 win and then Wash-U B with a 13-5 win. This ended pool play for the MUtants and left them in position to make their run for regionals.

Sunday's weather was showing much less inviting signs; A temperature in the low 40's with wind and rain throughout the day plagued games. The MUtants came out ready to play and beat Oklahoma State 13-6 with hyped sidelines and chants of "Tigers Fight" throughout the game. Wash-U beat Mizzou 4-13 next as conditions on the fields worsened. This put Mizzou on the brink for regionals. The next game against Missouri State would determine the outcome for the MUtants. By this time the wind and rain had picked up and every player on the field was shaking from the cold despite running around for hours. Mizzou started off the game chanting "Do the Heisman..." and playing with intensity. The score went up to 3-0 before MSU gathered their cutters and went on a run to make the score 3-3. The rest of the game was a battle more with the elements than the teams, trading points and dropping throws thanks to a stiff wind. Hard cap blew as the MUtants scored to go up 10-7, ending the game and sending Mizzou to regionals with 5th place.

As we cheered and ran to the cars to get warm (and fend off hypothermia) the rain slowed and the sun peeked from behind the clouds; A good omen for regionals in Little Rock AK on April 25-26 for the MUtants.
